Valhalla, A Danish Animated Film From 1986

Valhalla is a great, funny, and well made Danish animated film released in 1986 which, in my humble opinion, is suitable to all categories and all ages of animation/cartoons fans out there! It is one of the best all time films on the Viking Age (even if it’s a rather fictional animation), in my humble opinion at least, as well as the most expensive film produced in Denmark in 1986. The film was directed by Peter Madsen and Jeffrey J. Varab. Its script was written by Peter Madsen, Henning Kure, and Niels Søndergaard. It was produced by Ander Mastrup and is based on the eponymous comic book series which are still being released. Co-director Peter Madsen was one of the main writers and illustrator of the comics on which the animated film was based. The animated film revolves around Scandinavian folklore and the Norse mythology, with Æsir gods Thor and Loki being two of the main characters alongside two human children from the Viking Age by the name Røskva and Tjalfe who subsequently end up serving in Thor’s household. In addition, Odin, the king of the Norse gods, is also briefly featured.

The action of the film firstly takes place in Midgard (i.e. the realm of humans) and then it progresses to Asgard (i.e. the realm of gods) before reaching Jötunheimr (i.e. the realm of giants) where Útgarða-Loki reigns. Throughout the entire action of the film, the main plot revolves around Røskva and Tjalfe’s travels through Asgard and Jötunheimr and their interactions with the various gods and creatures of these two realms, all the while being in the company of a rather mischievous troll kid by the name Quark who latched on to Loki’s during one of his visits to Jötunheimr.
